👷♂️ My Journey: From Construction Sites to Civil Engineering Success
G’day, I’m Jesse Minchio, the Founder of Field Ready Construction Engineer Accelerator. I went from clueless teen to civil engineer—and now I help graduates accelerate their careers.
🛠️ Humble Beginnings
At 15, I had no direction, no mentors, and no clue what civil construction or engineering even meant. School wasn’t my thing, so I jumped at the chance to start a traineeship.
Out of 20 hopefuls on a two-week unpaid internship, only two of us stuck it out. By 19, I’d saved enough to buy my first house—massive for a kid like me. I worked under tough characters like “The General,” and gave everything to my first site practical.
🔄 A Turning Point
I was lucky to be paired with a leading hand who became my mentor. Over drinks, we’d joke about being engineers—but it lit a spark. After completing my Cert III in Civil Construction, I used the credits to enter uni.
I was promised my fees would be reimbursed if I passed. I did, but they brushed me off. When I later needed a simple letter to keep my license, they refused. That was it—I moved on.
📈 From Labourer to Leader
I saw engineers arrive in crisp shirts, then leave while I kept sweating through three shirts a day in the Queensland heat. I looked at the 50-year-old labourers still grinding and thought:
“I don’t want to be doing this in 30 years.”
I rented out my house, quit my job, and enrolled full-time in uni. I made the leap—and it was the best decision of my life.
